So if you can compare the output from the various diagnostic commands
between the two systems, that might help.

On my laptop, with working internal webcam and internal Intel sound
hardware, I have no /dev/audio* either.

It looks like the alsa system does see the camera as an audio device,
so it should be just a matter of getting your applications to use it.
Can you get the other applications I mentioned (ffmpeg, mpv) to record
audio from the camera?
