AFAIK they would still work over USB2.  There might be performance
issues with the video, but USB2 is definitely sufficient for some video
(as evidenced by the USB2 based video cards from DisplayLink).

Don't expect to play 3d games over it and watching movies won't work
well either, but I've used a DisplayLink video card for a regular 2nd
1600x1200 screen on a Fit-PC2 some years ago and it was perfectly fine
for things like editing text in Emacs, or reading mail, or browsing the
(non-youtube) web.

AFAIK the problem is rather that DisplayLink's USB3 video cards aren't
supported under GNU/Linux.  At least that was the case some years back.
Maybe things have changed since?
