I'd go with a good old powered USB2 hub, and connect keyboard, mouse, and
whatever
else you want to that. That should get you down to one USB and one VGA cable.

I've tested my DisplayLink with USB2 on an older laptop and while
performance is very basic, it's quite adequate for terminal use and
desktop use. I'd keep video playback over VGA though.
