Geode does not have the full i686 instruction set. (Something about NOPL) Try i486
Apparently faster than i586.

This is from memory and depends on GX or LX some say compile with flags |-march=i486 -mtune=geode|

Or just use x86. :)

That's an older Linux than I got. Perhaps I could try that package, if
I can get hold of it.
I've installed linux-image-4.9.0-7-686. It hangs in the same way as the
later versions. I don't know why it works for you and not for me.
