Oh. Had I seen the 2 GB, my first advice would have been to double your
memory. I have three laptops, and all have 4 GB or more. I have two VMs
that I use for nothing but browsing one particular site, and they are 3+
GB each.

I still suspect that something else is wrong, e.g. something spawning
that shouldn't be. But adding the memory will help performance long
term, and will probably help catch whatever is going on.

You should also use it to test new memory.

You may also find it easier to burn a CD with a live CD that has
memtest on it. I recommend finnix because it is command line only,
which, should you ever need to run the live CD Linux, may help avoid
your memory problem.
