Please share Xorg.0.log from an attempted Xorg session, either in /var/log/ or in
~/.local/share/xorg/. If this is a problem, at least share content of
/proc/cmdline, which the log includes.

How old is your NVidia/what model? Output from 'inxi -GxxS' in Gnome would do for
this. A very new model might require a non-FOSS driver from NVidia.

If xserver-xorg-video-nouveau is installed, try installing it. If it is not, try
purging it.

Installed

It may be that you don't have non-free repos installed, and need to in order to
obtain firmware your NVidia requires.

If i can I would like to avoid non-free

It's possible disabling plymouth could impact this. Either purge it, or add
plymouth.enable=0 to Grub's linux line to find out.

No Change

Which installation type do you have, legacy/MBR, or UEFI?

legacy/MBR

I have had the system running Stretch for years with no problem.  Did an upgrade and blank screen started so I did a fresh install and the blank screen happened straight away.
Hope someone can help.

Thanks
