I purged it but had to reinstall as the machine would only boot to a command line without it and with nomodeset.





Maybe that's precisely the problem. Nomodeset is a cmdline (boot) parameter that blocks use of
both competent X drivers for Intel's current century GPUs, modesetting and intel.


But didn't you just say the last official release of the driver was 4 years ago ?


What's your
Xorg.0.log report, or output from 'inxi -Gxx'?
