Much of the time, I do the same as you. Occasionally though, I have to
bite the bullet and get back to a working state. It shouldn't be too
before an update in Sid, anyway.

Note:
sudo mv /etc/alsa/conf.d /etc/alsa/conf.d.bak
followed by a reboot seems to be at least a temporary fix. Sound works now.
