On the archlinux sound troubleshooting wiki ("The only device
shown is 'dummy output'..." section), they suggest
executing
fuser -v /dev/snd/*
"to see which application is responsible for a direct access to the
sound card via alsa," and then perhaps closing that or those apps in
order to give pulseaudio precedence.
