Steve McIntyre and i understood John's statement that after dd or cp
there is a MBR partition table on the USB stick. The following
conversation would make few sense if we were wrong.

The MBR and its table are on the USB stick because they already are in
the ISO image. dd or cp just copy them to the medium.
