When I initially wrote that, I didn't know that the chain of directories didn't contain any non-directory items. (In fact, I'm still not 100% certain I do know that, although I think I do.) I also wasn't aware that rmdir could operate recursively; looking now, I don't see any indication in its man page that it can. Without that, it can only be used to delete one directory at a time, not "a chain of directories".
