If you have already identified the hardware, and confirmed it is not a 
driver/firmware issue, then the next step might be check for known 
issues or bugs against the method you are using to connect.  

I'm not familiar with either mate or lxde, they probably use one of either 
networkmanager or wicd.  There is some information here:

I usually check bug reports by using http://bugs.debian.org/ 
and add the pkgname on the end.
