no need to change something in the oldconfig, except for the chipset you
want to support.

download kernel and build tools and I usually 
        cp /boot/config-4.1<whatever> .config
        make oldconfig
        make -j4 deb-pkg

sudo dpkg -i ../<packages>


regarding diskspace you can use external drive too
