I've never had trouble with wodim for burning DVDs.  I've never tried to 
burn a bluray of any kind though.

I prepare my USB flash drives using the instructions found at
https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch04s03.html.en.  Using 
preseed.cfg files is very helpful.
