Difficult to tell without knowing a bit more. With only the hints you've
given it seems a bit early to blame the firewall.

 1) is there any connectivity between "remote" and "local" (I'm trying
    to use your terminology above)

 2) Is IP working between both machines? Do both have IP addresses?
Which? Is there a route from one to the other? E.g. from "local"
try in a command shell "ping remote" (how do you spell "remote"?
by its IP address?) and look carefully at the command's output.
Post all that here. From the command's output you can differentiate
between a routing failure, a name resolving problem (*if* you
are going by host names, which we don't know yet) or packets
    not arriving.

In short, more details needed :-)
