"Oh No!" sounds like you installed Gnome. Gnome is picky. Trying to use it
with nomodeset on cmdline is usually a lost cause unless using the NVidia
video driver.

#1-Remove nomodeset from the Grub configuration. Its only use in recent
releases of any distro is for emergency repairs, unless you are dependent
on the proprietary NVidia video driver.

#2-Purge the Intel Xorg driver. This should make Xorg use the internal
modeset driver automatically.

If these fail to help, reply back with lspci output, and provide via
http://paste.debian.net/ or equivalent /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
