After contemplation, my reply is:
I use vi.
In my ~/.config/mc/mc.ext I have
include/editor
Open=%var{EDITOR:vi} %f
and
# Default target for anything not described above
default/*
Open=%var{EDITOR:vi} %f
View=%var{EDITOR:vi} %f
Maybe that will assist you.
