This is an unnecessary slur. Were it not for Hanlon's razor[1], I'd even
qualify it as malicious.

The thing is that due to Mozilla's trademark policy (which in itself made
sense!), Firefox as such was incompatible with Debian's Free Software
guidelines. Tough luck.

It's of utter importance that a distribution takes its own guidelines
seriously: that's how I, as a user, can trust Debian (in this case,
for example, that I don't incur any liabilities by distributing
(a modified version of) Debian). That's why they went to the lengths
of distributing a forked version of Firefox (the source code itself
was always free!) without the trademark liability.

Of course, it's important to try to sort out things:
