Yeah. I advised Gene to put "-quotes around variable evaluations.
Now we have the educational example why this is best practice.

Currently i expect the next insight to arise when Gene describes
his shell code which derives the variable content from the output
of inotifywait(1).
(Describing the own software to others is often a good way to find
 the wrong assumptions and mental short circuits which cause the
 software to behave in an undesired way. Even if the others just
 sit there and say "ahum".)
