But xserver-xorg-video-radeon would be the right driver to use. Now you're using
the much simpler vesa driver.

The Xorg.0.log file shows that X is searching for the ati driver (package
xserver-xorg-video-ati) which will then use the radeon driver from the
xserver-xorg-video-radeon package.
Try the ati package and if it fails or not, let's look into the contents of the
Xorg.0.log file of that again.

Let's look at this further after trying xserver-xorg-video-ati.
