Maybe you want to edit something like this into your /etc/network/interfaces

----
auto lo wlan0

iface wlan0 inet static
        address 192.168.1.102
        netmask 255.255.255.0
        broadcast 192.168.1.255
        gateway 192.168.1.1
        wpa-driver wext
        wpa-scan-ap 1
        wpa-key-mgt WPA-PSK
        wpa-ssid your_ssid_of_the_hotspot
        wpa-psk your_top_secret_wireless_password
        dns-nameservers 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220

the line "dns-nameservers 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220" can be changed, I am
using the ones of opendns.org.

Please note, an entry does not work with network-manager. Use wicd instead.

Good luck!
