I'm not using Gnome but I have network-manager-gnome installed on Xfce,
and I'm fairly sure it is my GUI control for Network Manager.

My configuration for a Huawei 3G dongle has *99# for the Number, which
obviously isn't correct, and the Username and Password fields empty. It
has the correct APN shown for my provider, and along with the device
itself, that seems to be all that is needed.

I have a password for a web account with the provider, but this is not
involved when making the connection.
