Hint: ping tells you with an exit status of 0 that all's dandy, so
perhaps you don't need the grep. Ex.

  
  # 8 sec deadline
  if ping -c 2 -w 4 <your reference host> ; then
    echo "yay"
  else
    echo "nay"
  fi

Add option -q and others to taste.

Of course, if you are just displaying (and not firing off other scripts)
grep is fine :-)
