OP here.

Hugo, no I have an ATI card. I think I've narrowed this down. Yesterday
morning when I upgraded just prior to posting, 'apt' asked me to remove
'libbasicusageenvironment0' which I happily did.
Once I re-installed that and restarted GNOME, video was working again.
So, perhaps 'apt' screwed up by asking for it's removal, what do you
think?
