I am afraid I have no assistance to offer but this: don't use pan. It
is horribly inefficient, crashes unexpectedly when handling too many
newsgroups/articles, and is just chock-full of bugs. My experience
using it was nothing but a nightmare.
If you want a similar but infinitely superior newsreader, try xpn.
