There is no such thing as an "ordinary" Debian CD. That is the
multi-arch ISO- it just has the installer packages for both i386 and
amd64 on one disc, so it is misleading to say it 'works on both'.
Rather, it has packages for either.
i386 actually does work on both, but it's a shame to waste a 64-bit CPU
that way.
