This showed no useful information. The only output is from my EEEPC below, the Aspire showed no output at all.

Changed MAC, too, but you can of course still see the vendors (first two bytes).

Hope this helps a little bit. My solution at the moment is the well known addition "if.netnames=0" in grub commandline.
So I can easyly change from eth* to enp* when this is recommended.
