Well, if you're going to be a humorless dick about it - that's both irrelevant and wrong:
- it's not software at all, it's a sensor - it seems to talk via bluetooth - and they publish the protocol spec.- the smartphone app IS free software (not open source though, if you want to get really pedantic)
Unfortunately it DOESN'T seem to talk to the net or do email - but it looks easy enough to write something that would act as network/email gateway. (Still, at $59/device - who's going to buy enough of the things to instrument all of their plants - maybe a garden plot, though).
