The advantages of Debian on a USB stick is that its operation is
independent of any other operating system on the machine (or with the
vagaries which come with other software) and thet it can easily be moved
from machine to machine.

Other than a knowledge of d-i it does not require learning about extra
software configuration and there is no intermediary between it and the
bare metal.

Which is not to say a virtual machine wouldn't do a decent job if
configured correctly.
