Interesting. I am experiencing the problem with images generated by DeVeDe.
AFAIR I encountered the problem also with a KNOPPIX DVD image.
Right - looked it up - KNOPPIX 7.4.2 DVD size is not on 32kB boundary.
Will test Debian DVD iso as soon as possible and also try padding up to 32kB.
But I can confirm that Debian 8.1 firmware netinstall CD-iso is on 32kB and
works OK.

I really don't know what LG and Maxell pick not to like each other.
The supply of DVD-R in this small local market is limited. I can try TDK
instead of Maxell maybe or some Sonys. The rest is no-name which I shun.
Eventually I'm afraid all come out of the same factory with different labels.
Used to get some Philips made in Mexico but they are unobtainium by now.
The medium is said to be 16x but I use to burn only with max 8x or even 4x
when I want the resulting media to last years and not only weeks or months.

I gladly don't mind.
Only for VirtualBox I can speak.
In "settings" under "storage" add your CD/DVD drive as Host Drive.
You may use a virtual IDE controller or a virtual SATA controller to
connect to. That does not depend on the type of hw-drive.
Check the point "passthrough" and you are done.
It will recognize media in the drive and will be able to write.
The SUN girls and boys made virtual machine fairly easy.

[Rest snipped to be answered later. My weekend will be plenty full with family
stuff and a friend's wedding.]

Funny that you mention tropical Germany. Here we do have mid-winter now and
usually that may get as low as like 12-5°C or rarely even -5°C but now we
experience a hot 34°C - Celsius - not Fahrenheit! Very dry and windy.
This is 25 degrees south of the equator right in the middle of the continent.

I hope that you have some sort of air conditioning
Have a nice weekend
Eike
