In that case I wonder why the output from apt-cache policy indicates
it's not installed.
I wonder what's the output of:
dpkg -S /lib/firmware/radeon/R420_cp.bin
Is that the correct firmware for the chipset on the graphics's card?
IOW seeing the output of 'lspci | grep -i vga' would be useful.
and also 'lsmod | grep video' just for interest.
