I'm new to Debian.

Someone else configured the system for me. It was running o.k.

Then I downloaded and installed (using the synaptic package manager)
a speech recognition software (pocketsphinx). I removed it without
ever having used it.

Now the audio does not work. Neither in the browser (iceweasel) nor
with VLC media player.

Is there a straight-forward "restore" function for the relevant
software?

Hi, William.

I wouldn't expect straightforward installation of pocketsphinx and then straightforward removal of the package and its dependencies using synaptic would lead to your problem. But there are people here (almost everyone) who know much more about audio in Debian than I do. They may be able to help you.

You should help them out a bit by telling them:

1. version of Debian (Squeeze, Wheezy, Jessie, testing, etc.)
2. which desktop environment you are running (Gnome, Xfce, KDE, LXDM, etc.)
3. whether or not you have kept the system updated / upgraded with the latest versions of all installed packages 4. anything else that might pertain to any special configuration of your system

Good luck!
Jape
