Basic knowledge of what? Filtering of ip packets? Or basic knowledge of
Debian? The "basic knowledge" here appears to be that "firewalls" are
good. How about seeing them as irrelevant to most users?
Nobody (especially those with a rudimentary knowledge of Debian) needs
what is called a "firewall". Install and get on with it is not a bad
approach.
gufw if they really want something to play with. Unless iptables is up
their street.
