But there's not much point going smaller than 1MB or so, and it will
give you a bit of breathing space in case things grow.

*Please* don't rely on that - it's only likely to grow in size. And if
you ever want to dual-boot or do other things that might use space on
the ESP you'll be screwed. The official recommended minimum size for
the ESP is 512 MiB, and that's what we use by default in d-i.
