Sorry, Brian.  I've been stuck on this for ages.  Running xset -dpms is so 
easy that I hvaen't put much energy into it.  But I can find nothing for 
Debian, only for Ubuntu, and the above is what I got when I searched for 
".xinitrc deprecated in debian" 

I can find nothing other than writing an xorg.conf, and therein lies a 
minefield.
