No, I didn't confuse anything.  I know perfectly well that *dm is a display 
manager not a DE.  I thought that gdm3 was later than gdm and that Gnome 2 
would use the eralier one, and Gnome 3 the later.   You have still not 
explicitly said that Gnome 2 uses gdm3, so you have still not actually said 
that I was wrong in believing that it usually does not.  

And yes, I know, before you start lecturing me again on my ignorance that the 
dm is not tied to the DE.  But I am still under the impression, possibly 
erroneously, since I use neither, that Gnome 2 does not normally use gdm3.
