I use xbindkeys, and with the aid of xbindkeys-config I set
'Ctrl+Up' to execute "/usr/bin/amixer set Master 5%+" (volume up) and
'Ctrl+Down' to execute "/usr/bin/amixer set Master 5%-" (volume down).
