Are the sound modules loaded? I'm guessing snd_hda_intel for the Intel

after boot, no:
-> lsmod | grep snd
(empty output)

what is strange is that the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf is not used,
as it actually contains a line:
install snd-emu10k1 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-emu10k1 && { /sbin/modprobe --quiet snd-emu10k1-synth ; : ; }
cheers,
