My comment was based on the fact that a day or two ago one reader installed 
pavucontrol without PulseAudio and then was surprised that it didn't work.  I 
don't think it would be possible to install PulseAudio without Alsa, but I 
don't intend to try! ;-) :-)

PulseAudio is not a dependancy of pavucontrol.
