That is the solution.
I downloaded a Ubuntu 14.04 Server image, wrote it to a disk, and ran
it in Rescue Mode, set the partition 12 (where I had believed the
Ubuntu system to have been installed) for the root system, rebooted,
and I have booted into Ubuntu, and into Debian.
The system is again operational.
Thank you for your assistance.
And, I have posted a feature request, for the Rescue Mode, to be added
to the Ubuntu Desktop installation images.
