I'm trying to learn here, so it would help if I knew why, or at least
got a link to such an unrecommendation.

You wouldn't open your standard user desktop. You'd open root's desktop which wouldn't be populated. Not to mention the standard caveat against running X as root. It's a security risk. :) Ric
