There's no reason to ever build any packages as root. It's not
necessary, and can lead to overwriting files that you want if there are
bugs in the build scripts.

fakeroot occasionally has bugs,[1] but considering that the entire
Debian package archive is built using it, it should work well enough for
doing what you're doing.
