v4l error using vlc

I am trying to use vlc to view streaming video. I start vlc, then go to Media/Open Network Stream and enter the stream URL and click on Play. I then get the following two errors:

VLC media player 2.0.6 Twoflower (revision 2.0.6-0-gbe9623c)
[0x2070108] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface. [0x23d66d8] v4l2 demux error: cannot open device '/dev/video0': No such file or directory [0x2509968] v4l2 access error: cannot open device '/dev/video0': No such file or directory
[0x7f8dc000bb38] main input error: open of `v4l2://' failed

I am guessing that there is some configuration that I am missing, but not having used vlc, or v4l before I don't know what it might be.

Searching for 'v4l' with aptitude gave the following possibly useful information:

i A libv4l-0 - Collection of video4linux support libraries i A libv4l-0:i386 - Collection of video4linux support libraries i A libv4l-dev - Collection of video4linux support libraries (development files) i A libv4lconvert0 - Video4linux frame format conversion library i A libv4lconvert0:i386 - Video4linux frame format conversion library

Nothing else showed as being installed.

Any help, or pointers to help is appreciated.
