libgl1-mesa-swrast incompatible with GNOME?



If I try to install the above package, APT wants to remove

It also installs the dependency libosmesa6, so it may be the combination of
the two that removes all the above. 

All this arises because all 3d-accelerated programs now complain "libGL
error: failed to load driver: swrast" when loading, and some (e.g.
supertuxkart) fail to run at all after the last time I upgraded Wheezy.

Using the proprietary nVidia drivers because nouveau's default settings
prevent me from suspending my PC (see "Fixing corrupted video on resume" in
https://wiki.debian.org/Suspend) and I'm much too lazy to debug the problem.
