Why are you grepping for 'samba' when the started daemons are 'smbd' and
'nmbd'? According to 'apt-file' the package 'samba' contains initscripts
with those names.
Other than that you could also look at the logs, something like
journalctl -ab | grep nmbd
could provide more information.
