I've personally disabled Secure Boot from a cold boot to the BIOS, and
then installed Ubuntu, and had both OS's work. I've done this at least
twice, maybe more. That being said, perhaps the reason I failed to
install a *Debian* dual-boot was because I shut off Secure Boot from
the BIOS instead of Windows.

I have a million college age kids. OK, actually only three, but the way
they wear out laptops, it feels like a million. So, in the past 5
years, I've bought close to 10 laptops. On every one, I've booted
Linux, at the very least just long enough to copy the "restore
partition" off to a backup machine. But, one and only one of those
machines was impossible to turn off Secure Boot. In that case it didn't
matter because it was destined to be a Windows-only computer (for one
of my kids to use at college), but I *have* seen one computer on which
you could not turn off Secure Boot.

This is why I buy all my laptops at Costco. If for some reason it
doesn't run Linux, I can return it within 90 days, no questions asked,
no restocking fee. Just make sure you preserve that restore partition
so that you can give them back a working Windows computer.
