Thanks for your input. I was going to set up smartd (very thorough man
pages), but this problem started. Well, actually it's not the first
time i've heard a drive going like this, but it usually stops after a
while.
All drives pass smartctl -H and they're all in "active/idle" (hdparm
-C). I'm running -t long on sdb now (it'll be over in about 2h).
