Hmm...  Do you have both of these kernel modules installed?  I think
those /dev/md/* symlinks are automatically generated when md_mod is
loaded.  Not sure.  Easy to look for though.

  $ lsmod | grep -e dm_mod -e md_mod
  dm_mod                 64008  35 
  md_mod                 92559  5 raid1
