Make sure Gnome's "Classic" mode (AKA, fallback mode) is installed. There is a package for that. Consider installing MATE instead (Google for it.) They recently released a new version which runs very smoothly. MATE is a fork of Gnome 2, and there is a repository to install it using apt-get (it is not an official Debian package---yet.)
