I didn't have the same problems with Fedora and opensuse in the past. I briefly tried Manjaro and it was working fine too. The problem I am having is with Debian based distros, for some reason that I can't figure out.The clicks could be caused by the HDD resetting the heads following an I/O failure. If the clicks are from the HDD then they won't go away with another OS.
